Zach, Dom, and Brandon having been making music together in one outfit or another for over half a decade. From folk-rock funk bands, to open mic nights of Death Cab for Cutie covers, to a more ill-advised ska-rock project, any and all influences and styles were worthy of exploring, even embracing. In the Winter of 2015 after a long period of being separated, the three reunited and began playing again, but this time things had changed. They quickly realized that what was emerging from their first sessions was something new; a richer, more mature sound, a sound that is now known as The Bardobees.
The Bardobees’ sound owes itself to the varied influences and experiences of its members: The dark imagery and tenderness of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The Antlers’ Peter Silberman can be found in Zach’s approach to lyric and songwriting; the bright, Beatlesesque tones and timbres of Dom’s guitar lines adds a touch of pop and innocence; and the influence of jazz, orchestral percussion, and particularly DMB’s Carter Beauford in Brandon’s drumming lend the band a fine touch and a firm, driving groove. The result is a sound that is not lacking in sophistication, but remains true to their original motivation for making music in the first place: to create a feeling that is meaningful and to share that feeling with others.
In the Fall of 2016, joined in the studio by Dave Fellows on bass, The Bardobees finished their debut EP, “Oh Mary,” a commentary on the everyday cruelty and confusion so common in modern society, as well as a very relatable take on personal loss, illustrated in the 1916 hanging of an abused circus elephant named Mary.
“Oh Mary” was written, recorded, and produced at Bardobees Sound Studio(Dom and Zach's dusty basement) in Wyandotte, MI, in the summer of 2016.
